WWE Superstars is Goneburgers, Cancelled by WGN
WWE Superstars has had a short but good run having debuted on April 16th, 2009. Unfortunately WGN has announced its cancellation with the last episode airing on April 7th, 2011 - just days short of its 2nd anniversary. Shows are usually cancelled due to high cost and low ratings with the latter being the proverbial nail to the equally proverbial coffin.
For me, this cancellation comes as no surprise and here's why...
Firstly, Superstars debuted with some of WWE's top talent such as John Cena but lately we've seen nothing but mid-carders take over the show. When was the last time you saw any main-eventers show up on Superstars? Now this isn't a bad thing in itself, many mid-carders like Tyler Reks got some much needed screen time, but to attract viewers Superstars needed, well, Superstars!
Also, in the days of ECW you would get a full-show of each brand (Raw, Smackdown, and ECW) but when ECW was killed off this left a large gaping hole going to promos or clips from Raw and Smackdown. Here in New Zealand we get Raw, Superstars, and Smackdown in one go (one after the other) so for me this made it look like there was too much filler and not enough content on Superstars.
Now Superstarswasn't isn't a bad show. It fares better with the pros and commentators than NXT for example, who regularly trash it, but Superstars just didn't grab my attention at all. It was "half a show" with minor storylines being played out. Nothing was on the line so for me you didn't need to invest in the characters or what was happening.
Hopefully, the WWE has learned from this experience and will use it to improve their existing products. For example, if the threat of cancellation is there and they want to keep the show going what can they do differently next time. I should also note that Superstars could be sold to another network or end up as an internet-only show like NXT.
Regards, Cliff.
